Urban areas of our country, as centers of population concentration, economic activities, services and vital infrastructure, are always facing numerous challenges and problems. In such circumstances, conducting targeted scientific research that is in line with real needs can provide the basis for providing executive solutions, efficient policymaking and improving the quality of urban life. Understanding this necessity, this study sought to evaluate the alignment of the topics of theses and dissertations of the Department of Geography and Urban Planning of the University of Zanjan with real issues in urban areas. In the study, all master's and doctoral theses and dissertations in the department were examined. The data collection tool was a checklist, which Ravar Matrix, Ucinet and Gephi were used to analyze and display the results. The results show that although the scientific cooperation network in the Department of Urban Planning of the University of Zanjan is relatively coherent and a significant part of the topics are aligned with real issues in the urban areas of our country. However, some key areas such as social justice in the distribution of urban benefits and facilities or gender issues and the status of women have still received less attention. The research emphasizes the role of problem-based research in guiding academic studies, the need for continuous review in selecting and guiding research topics, and also strengthening scientific cooperation in academic groups. In order to provide the basis for maximum utilization of the capacity of academic research in solving complex and multidimensional problems in our country. It is also suggested that in future research, this model be applied to other scientific groups and different areas of geography in order to form more targeted and efficient research paths.
