The Impact of Geometric Form Indices on the Structural Resistance of Load-Bearing Facades in Residential Buildings of Tehran

With the growing use of geometric forms in the design of load-bearing facades of residential buildings,examining their role in enhancing structural resistance has gained particular importance.This is especially relevant given that many contemporary facades lack sufficient resistance.The present study was conducted with the aim of identifying and analyzing the geometric form indices that influence the structural resistance of load-bearing facades in Tehran’s residential buildings.The research adopted an applied-survey approach,employing the Delphi technique.In the first stage,22 indices were extracted and categorized into five thematic groups.Subsequently,the impact of each index on facade resistance was evaluated based on expert opinions.Findings revealed that the morphological category—including aspects such as connections,coordination with other facade elements,texture,composition,dimensions,and angles—plays the most significant role in enhancing structural resistance.In contrast,the spatial integration category—covering social,environmental,climatic,and economic indices—exerts the least influence.Results further indicate that key indices such as geometric form,material type,proportions,scale,and cultural factors directly contribute to increasing resilience and reducing vulnerability of load-bearing facades,whereas decorative elements such as texture,balance,and symmetry have a more limited effect.Overall,this study demonstrates that the selection and application of optimized geometric forms can serve as an effective strategy in the design of residential load-bearing facades,simultaneously improving both aesthetic quality and structural performance.These findings provide a scientific and practical foundation for architects and designers in developing more resistant and sustainable facades.
